Where does the money go?
- CBCF funds innovative research, health education and advocacy programs that aim to reduce the incidence of breast cancer, lower mortality rates and support women who have experienced breast cancer and their families.
- Though CBCF also funds health education and advocacy programs, investing in innovative and relevant research is CBCF’s first priority – 70 per cent of funds raised for CBCF go toward supporting the best and brightest minds in Canada.
Living well for your breast health
- One in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s the most common cancer in Canadian women and the second leading cause of cancer death.
- Many people think breast cancer is mostly linked to family history or genes but the reality is only 5-10% of breast cancers are.
- More than 90% of breast cancers are linked to other factors, including how and where we live, work and play. In fact, according to the World Cancer Research Fund, at least a third of all breast cancers are preventable.
- This means how you live your life can have a big impact on your health. You can’t change some of the risk factors: like being a woman, getting older, having a family history of breast cancer, or a mutation in the BRCA genes.
- There are other risk factors that you can change: like an unhealthy body weight, being physically inactive, smoking, drinking alcohol, prolonged use of combined hormone therapy during menopause, or being exposed to harmful chemicals at work and home.
